oh no he didnt!
Steve Poisoner is an idiot. So is Meg Whitman.
Jerry Brown all the way!
Seriously? He may have taught at schools yourself but he’s the one that has a lot of learning to do. School is about helping them reach that higher education, not giving up and leaving them be.
Ugh, this is just wrong.
As much as I am not a fan of Republicans OR this statement by Poizner, I highly behoove everyone to do exactly what the article says and NOT TAKE HIS WORDS OUT OF CONTEXT. Think about it. What he says makes sense. NOT EVERYONE is made for UC Berkeley or college in general, and vocational education WOULD help with the dropout rate. Don’t act like you’ve never called Mount Pleasant “Mount Pregnant” at least once in your life. Vocational school would at least give those who are not in the best of situations some options to better their lives instead of wallowing in self-pity over their could-have-been-inevitable rejection from a university.
I truly believe, however, that students such as the ones he DID describe (gang members, etc) CAN make a turn around. They CAN reach certain goals and make it to higher education if they really wanted to, but be realistic. Oftentimes, DO they want to go to more school? Probably not. Offering the option to enter a, 18 month program per se to become a surgical technician to make $30 an hour would at least grant this person some success as opposed to stretching themselves out to farfetched goals.
I will agree that his generalizations WERE…not-so-awesome, for lack of better adjective. They were TOO general and expressed too much frustration with students who perhaps made fun of him for an obvious separation in culture. Maybe he was too authoritative. Maybe he was too chauvinistic. Maybe he was too…and forgive me, but I’m going to say it, WHITE. Mount Pleasant is a school that is predominantly Asian, Hispanic, African-American, with a very little population of white students. So maybe they just didn’t like him.
I’m just saying…watch the teacher movies like Dangerous Minds with Michele Pfeiffer and it’s pretty legit. Minorities in tough situations sometimes patronize their authority figures for simply being in a better status than they are in. I.e., “You’re middle class? You got it good!” “You’re white? YOU MUST have it good!”
Idk…this is just my useless opinion. Have a good night.
